Any tips for upgrading

I started playing on a new server I am lvl 59 now, my clan leader is helping me get a +7 chitin armor set. But I need to upgrade my +7 cleavers to +8 I know theirs probably not a high success rate.

Anyone know if their is any tips on how to upgrade without failing? My brother told me to wait till I see a few fails on the anvil then try and upgrade and it's a better chance but thats never worked for me.
